I show how I removed a stuck Moen shower cartridge using an Easy Out tool. I initially attempted to remove the sleeve of the cartridge using a tap and dowel, but I apparently did not have the right size tap, so I searched my toolbox and found a No. 6 easy out that did the trick. This Moen shower valve is 45 years old and hadn’t been used in at least a year. The cartridge was stuck due to an accumulation of mineral deposits over time. It is a very common problem.

Last week I had a huge leak of hot water out of my bathroom faucet, like the faucet was open 100% while the handle was DOWN. So I turned off the house water and tried to remove the cap thinking I could just replace the seals. 3 hours later and the sink was wrecked and the valves below also were leaking. I just couldn’t get it open, possibly due to calcium deposits.
Anyway so I had to call a plumber and this is what he did:
1 – replace old faucet with a new Moen
2 – new valves
3 – cut out old brass pipes and replace with plastic all the way back to the wall
All together this cost me 5, is that way too much? I had no choice since I needed to turn the water back on for my house.
For more details of my ordeal: unclekenta.blogspot.com How to remove a very old corroded stuck Moen bath shower faucet cartridge. WARNING: Use this method at your own risk. I am not a plumber. It is quite possible to damage the pipes when torquing the faucet with this much force. Again, this is a last resort cartridge removal method. I did some research online and found this web page that discusses the issue and the thread tap and bolt process: vivara.net If anyone knows a better way to get these jammed stuck Moen faucet cartridges out, I’d love to hear it. PLEASE RATE AND COMMENT. THANKS FOR WATCHING.
